This is where I work

A few weeks back I contacted a local branch of The Daily Herald to find out how they could help us with advertising our community classes. A few weeks later I got a call back from their business reportr who wanted to do a story on us. Viola ~ this is the story that went out this week. It was kinda fun being in the paper, but this picture of me is awful! I was trying to gracefully pose with braces. As you can see it didn't work well at all.

Orem small-business center helps entrepreneurs of all types

With the economic turmoil depleting personal finances, displacing employees and forcing some to seek new career paths, more and more Utah County residents are turning to self-employment to support themselves and their families. Floralyn Martinez, a master hair stylist for 17 years, researched the possibility of opening her own salon last summer. It was at that time that she came into contact with the Orem Small Business Development Center located just west of Utah Valley University. She didn't have a clue about the steps to starting her own business.
"I'm an artist behind the chair, but I'm computer illiterate," she said. "I was either going to start up my own place or go to another salon."

A free resource provided to entrepreneurs, startup businesses and existing merchants, the Orem Small Business Development Center is one in a network of such centers across the state tasked with not only helping the self-employed get into business, but stay in business, said Ken Fakler, the Orem center's managing director.

Funded through the Small Business Administration, the state of Utah and Utah Valley University, the Orem center assists clients in applying for SBA loans, putting together a business plan, doing market research and strategies, and learning the nuts and bolts of business ownership. It serves clients in both Utah and Wasatch counties.

Martinez said Fakler and Orem center consultant Laurie Ann Thomas taught her how to write up a business proposal, where to find resources and apply for funding, and how to navigate the often treacherous waters of self employment.

In October, Martinez and her husband, Marcos, opened Katumba's Day Spa and Salon, 1015 S. State St. in Orem, which offers a wide range of services from hair styling, massage therapy, skin care and aesthetics. Their salon employs a full staff of stylists and therapists, and business is slowly but steadily increasing, she said.

"Ken is absolutely incredible and knows what he's talking about," Martinez said. "It was a huge, huge help. I would say they are a major aspect of getting me started."

With the housing slump and high gas and food prices hurting businesses and residents, Fakler said the center has seen a large influx of clients in recent months. From the newly unemployed to people looking to earn some income on the side, the center's clients come from all walks of life and range from college-age students to people in their 70s.

The center supports clients who own businesses with dozens of employees to stay-at-home moms who want to take their eBay sales to the next level.

The center works with about 35 to 40 new businesses a month, or nearly 500 per year. About 50 percent of the center's clients are women, Thomas said. "It's really an entrepreneurial area," she said.

Because approximately 80 percent of small businesses go under in the first five years, the center stresses the importance of formulating a strong business plan and funding options as well as forming a long-term relationship with owners to continue to provide advice as their companies grow. The center also offers free classes on a variety of related topics taught by professionals.
"We have very, very few businesses that go broke if they're doing the things we ask them to do," Fakler said.

Just two weeks ago, Martinez said Fakler stopped by her salon to inquire about her business's progress and see if there was anything he could do to help. Without the assistance of resources like the Orem Small Business Development Center, she doubts if she would have taken the risk of living out her dream.

"I would have probably ended up going to another salon," she said. "I wouldn't have had the guts to try to go out on my own."

Our 24th of July fun

Yesterday my extended family had a fun-filled holiday celebration together. It started at the Major's backyard pool with 25 or so of us there. We spent over an hour enjoying the water and splashing around. Then it was dinner at Grandmas (thank you Aunt Laurie and Aunt Janine for the yummy food) and lastly fireworks. It was so nice to get together with as many of the family members as possible - especially the Dabbs family from Alaska.

This is Amy - Laurie Ann's sister. She recently got a new job and she's loving it.

This is Kent - Laurie Ann's brother. He just turned 18 and will be shipping off to join the Army in 3 weeks. He won't be around to see our baby but we look forward to having him home for Christmas. Go Kent!

This is Bran, Lar, and numerous cousins in the background. The pool was so big and relaxing. Thank you Majors for your hospitality.

A picture of me with our baby. I will be forever grateful that I was able to find a one-peice maternity swimsuit. I love it.

Temple Trip

Wow, what a night we had last night! I've made it a goal to go with Bran to the temple once a month until our baby makes it impossible. Last night was our "reserved" night to go. Although I really enjoyed every second of the trip, it was very, very busy.

The Provo temple is closed for cleaning right now, so traffic has increased at Mt. Timp. drastically. After getting ready we were directed to take our places in line with a bazillion other patrons in the hallway. Yep, that's right, the chapel was full, the overflow was full, and the hallway was almost completely full too. We waited an entire hour to get into a session. We were blown away by it all. Needless to say, it was a 4 hour temple trip. From here on out I think we'll double check the closure schedule before heading out the door :-)

BTW, I wasn't the biggest preggo lady in our session. Thankfully there was one other lady that wasbigger then me. This distinction is so important to me right now because of my current "condition".

Nursery ideas?

I'm stumped. In just over 4 months our little boy will make his arrival and I haven't even figured out how to decorate his room. Since we'll be students again next month I'm going to have to do all my decorating on a very strict budget. Does anyone have ideas on to share with me? Since we're in an apartment I can't paint the walls. I've wondered about making our own large frames out of molding, what do you think?

I've also been wondering if anyone has found "wonderful treasures" at stores like Kid to Kid or others that sell used products. My brain is just spinning with the overwhelming duty of this task.

Baby Shopping

Last weekend Brandon and I went out and purchased a rocking chair/recliner. As a child I remember Mom rocking me to sleep in the one we had. We made many wonderful memories in that chair. Ever since then I knew I would have to have a similar rocker when I became a mommy. This one is so fantastic! It's so incredibly soft and the rocking mechanisms are so smooth. I could sit in it for hours. It also works great for sore, swollen feet. Thank you honey, I am so happy with it.

Then, yesterday I had a chance to skip out of work a couple of hours early and I went baby shopping. I bought our first baby outfit. I couldn't resist the adorableness of the outfit. Our little guy is moving around more and more with each new day. It's so wonderful to feel him moving around and growing. I love this adventure.

Our Baby

We finally had the chance to go in and see our Baby. It was such a lot of fun! I could have stayed there for 3-4 hours just watching our new little one move all around. Thanks Jenni for the suggestion of eating chocolate. The baby absolutely adored that yummy stuff. We were very fortunate to be able to have our BIG ultrasound at Utah Valley Regional Hospital. They did a fantastic job and were very investigative in all the measurements that they took. Their measurements say we've got a big baby on it's way. Our little one is measuring 10 days bigger then normal. I'm so happy. Right now all I want is a happy, healthy full term baby.
